Using the Opticon Scanner

The Opticon scanner is designed to store your barcodes until you are ready to import them into Charms. The scanner holds one set of codes at a time. Therefore, after each use, you need to delete the barcode data so it is ready for the next set of barcodes.

What do you want to do?

Install the Opticon Scanner software and drivers

You have the option of installing a 32-bit Opticon driver or a 64-bit Opticon driver. If you are unsure if your system is 32 or 64 bit, in the Windows Control Panel, look at your System settings.

  1. Install the Opticon software and drivers.
    1. For Windows-compatible machines, all the Opticon files are enclosed in a zip file. Click this link and extract the files to a directory on your desktop, or any location you want them to reside in: Charms Opticon Zip File.
    2. Open the charmsopticon directory and double-click either the optous64 or the optousb file if your system is 32 bit.
  2. Follow the installation prompts.

Retrieve barcodes from the Opticon Scanner

When you finish scanning your items, connect the scanner to your desktop to retrieve the barcodes.

NOTE: Prior to starting this process, check the  charmsopticon directory for a  barcodes.txt file. If one exists, delete it as it is from the previous barcode retrieval process.
  1. Plug the Opticon Scanner into your desktop with the provided USB cable.
  2. In the Charmsopticon directory (or the directory you installed the software and drivers into), double-click CharmsOpticon.
  3. On the OPN2001 screen, ensure the Barcode data section is empty. If there are barcodes listed, click Delete barcodes to delete the old data.

barcodes.txt file id is created in your charmsopticon directory. This is the file you use to upload the barcode data into Charms. In Charms this functionality is called Importing an Opticon file.

Import an Opticon file into Charms

When you retrieve barcode data from the Opticon Scanner, a barcodes.txt file is created. This is the file you use to upload barcode data into Charms.

You can use the Opticon Scanner to import bulk data for Calendar (event attendance), Library, Inventory, and Uniforms.
